I’ve loved this band for about a year now; this is what Colombia sounds like NOW: Systema Solar.  Future music, la raza cosmica!  Africa, folklore, tweaks, moogs, middle eastern sounds, twangs, sound systems, jamaica, campo, accordian, cumbia, la costa, ahora y FUTURO!

Click here and you can listen to a nice collection of their music and read an in-depth article about them in LSD Magazine {cut to page 374}.  Can’t wait to hear more about this group and see them live in LA soon {?}…

Their live shows are audio-visual feasts the band likes to call “Berbenautika,” inspired by the tradition of Colombian sound systems, “pikos,” and local Colombian parties, “verbena.” – AOL SPINNER

Check out this feature in, celebrating Los Rakas‘ appearance at Cypress Hill’s ‘Smoke Out Festival‘ tomorrow with a FREE DOWNLOAD of the group’s classic track, ‘Hierba.’

“Oakland by way of Panama duo Los Rakas have been said to be on the sole mission of bringing reggaeton back to its roots—which is Panamanian reggae sung in Spanish. “Hierba” has a slinky love song vibe, and it is, in a way. It rides like smoothed out ode to kicking it easy, breezy with your lady, but it is actually a tribute to herbal imbibing.”-RCRDLBL

The group performs TOMORROW w/ Bay Area’s The Park band at 2:15 PM at the Indonesia Stage.  Follow me @conrazon and @losrakas on twitter for up-to-the-minute updates from the festival!

In a nutshell: September found me jetting around the country visiting family, friends and clients across South Carolina, Puerto Rico, Miami, Dominican Republic and Colombia – thanks to Jetblue’s All You Can Fly Pass.

While in Colombia, Bomba Estereo‘s Simon Mejia insisted I tried something called Viche.  I’d heard of the drink this past March in Austin, when UK-transplant-to-Cali, Colombia and amazing music maker, Quantic, also insisted I try it (he also wrote a blog about it w/ photos of various brands of the stuff):

“It is produced from the fermentation of a wild variety of sugar cane and is well known for its aphrodisiac effects alongside other varities like Arrechon, Tomaseca & Tumbacatre (Bed Breaker).”

What’s up with this stuff?

Well I tried it during my time in Bogota…and it’s AMAZING.  It’s pleasant to the taste, earthy and sweet, not too out of control…healing.  Warm.  I can see why it may be an aphrodisiac to some, but more so for me, it was a bit psychedelic.  I found myself staring at a mural for a few minutes and dancing like I was in a Bollywood film like a loka gitana to the tunes of DJ Karim {that may have happened without the viche…:D}.

…and I’m not the only one.  These guys REALLY love Viche.  Check this out:

Fierce: Zuzuka Poderosa in Paper Spaceship {Photos}

Zuzuka Poderosa is a special and powerful woman.  Drawing a blank on how we met exactly, after spending the summer in NYC, we linked and it’s been love at first sight ever since.  We’ve run around the town painting her magenta, conspiring over coffee, saki bombs and choripan.  I wouldn’t call her a ‘Baile Funk‘ artist {still figuring out what exactly to call her music}, she incorporates elements of the sound (with its’ origins in the favela’s of Rio de Janeiro) blended with electronica, hip-hop, her immense personality and a large dose of major ESTILO (style).  Born in Brazil and raised on the coast all the way to the West Indies, Zu eventually settled in Brooklyn, where she’s lived the last 10 years.

Check out Zuzuka rock the entire house at the Remezcla Musica launch this past September.  And watch out for her on tour this fall on the West Coast and Canada…Oh, and in case you’re wondering what Moombahton is, check it out.

Zuzuka Poderosa rocks it on a NYC rooftop.  More fotos here.

This is a recent interview + photo shoot Zuzuka did with Paper-Spaceship Mag.
– catch a tidbit:

Can you tell me a bit about any other projects you’re working on?
I did a collaboration with DJ Rekha recently Desi/ Baile project. Super hot!! I’m working on an Remix EP with Sonora, DJ Orion, and Pagame. It’s not at all Baile Funk.  That’s what I love about music.  My style can cross over to so many genres.

P-O-D-E-R-O-S-A, indeed.
